The Animafest Zagreb 2022 award ceremony starts at the SC Cinema at 8 pm, and the winning films will be shown under the stars at 9:30 pm on the Tuškanac Summer Stage. Admission is free, and the first 200 visitors get free popcorn. Stay with us, eagerly expect the winners and check out the selection of the best among the best.
And ahead of tonight’s peak of the animation celebration in Zagreb and the announcement of the best, Saturday is completely filled with films for children, both in the Tuškanac cinema and in the city cultural centres (all completely free), masterclasses of great animators (Paul Driessen, Marta Pajek, Aya Suzuki) and a big presentation of the new Croatian animation to Croatia and the world. Reruns of missed feature eye candies can also be ‘caught’, as well as this year’s retrospective hits of the Zagreb School and films that won the Audience Award in the festival past.
The Tuškanac Cinema will be dedicated to children and young people until 5 pm (starting at 10 am) – first the Films for Children Competition for ages 3–6, then from 11 am for ages 7–10, and then the Audience Award 4 with films suitable for all ages (Hedgehog’s Home, About Ivan the Fool, Lost and Found), Family Programme 1 at 1 pm, and 2 at 2 pm (with medium-length films Giuseppe, No-No in Space, Anry in the Sky and Looking for Santa). At 3:30 pm you can watch a selection from the recent Czech animation for children in the selection of the Anifilm festival from Liberec (part of the AFN network). Admission is free to all listed events. The Audience Award 1 at 5 pm is perhaps the strongest selection of this special programme with films from the first two decades of Animafest. From 7 pm you can once again see the impressive feature-length French Crossing executed by oil painting on glass, with an allegorical theme of emigration and coming of age.
At the &TD Theatre, a rich programme of lectures features unique lectures by Aya Suzuki (10 am) (Japanese-British director and layout and storyboard artist who has worked with Netflix, Disney, Warner Brothers and Paramount, but also on films like Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs), Marta Pajek (11 am) and Oscar-nominated animation legend Paul Driessen (12 pm). At 3:30 pm the New Bulgarian University presents a selection from its student and graduate films. The evening at &TD will end with screenings of the Grand Competition Short Film 3 and 4 (17 and 18:30).
We say good morning at the SC Cinema at 10 am with the segment Bonjour Cannes 1958 of the Zagreb School, followed by a selection from the early Croatian animation at 11:30 am. This is excellent programming, because after this block of our classics follows the presentation of new Croatian productions in the Croatian Film Competition 1 and 2 (1 pm and 3 pm), in the presence of most of our makers of all generations and, of course, conversations with them. At 5:30 pm, check out the visually and sonically fascinating feature Dozens of Norths by Koji Yamamura.
Saturday is also the richest day of the event Animafest in Your Neighbourhood. The film competition for children (age 7-10) is shown at 11 am at the Dubrava People’s Open University, the one for ages 3-6 at 7:30 pm at the KNAP (Moslavački parkić). Giuseppe and No-no in Space can be seen at KUC Travno from 11 am.
An animated film workshop for children led by Mitchelle Tamariz will be held in the Mediatheque of the French Institute from 10 am to 2 pm.
