THE ROUND TABLE WITH THE SUBJECT OF EDUCATION VIA ANIMATION WAS HELD TODAY
06/03/2009

Within the Children’s Programme of Animafest, the World Festival of Animated Film, the round table dealing with the subject of  “Education through animation” took place for the first time.  The round table was intended for teachers and pedagogues, television and radio children’s programme producers and all those who have an impact on the selection of educational content intended for children.

Martina Peštaj, a media psychologist from Slovenia, Vesna Sudar, a producer of foreign children’s series for Croatian Radiotelevision and Vjekoslav Živković, an animator, all participated in the round table. Igor Prassel, Director of the Animateka Film Festival in Ljubljana, and a long-term organiser of educational children’s programmes, was the moderator.

The aim of the discussion was to draw attention to animation as a possible medium to enable the coverage of certain important issues within the curriculum, as well as those sensitive issues that children do not easily talk about themselves.

The participants of the round table concluded that there is the need for a person or institution to initiate the cooperation of experts and animators with the objective of producing educational animated films. This would implicate linking the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport with production companies, which is a difficult but not impossible task to achieve here in Croatia. The participants agreed.

Furthermore, teachers and professors have confirmed that animation has not been used enough as an educational medium in Croatian classrooms. They concluded that it is a segment of the curriculum that should be given greater attention.

A considerable lack of animated films in schools is related to the negligible existence of animation in one of the most influential sectors of the media – television. Vesna Sudar, a producer of foreign children’s series programme for Croatian Radiotelevision confirmed that there has been a decrease in good quality and educational animated films. Television yields to increasing pressure of commercial and poor quality programme for children, therefore, animated film is the area in which progress towards a greater educational content can be successfully realised.
