Phil Mulloy is the winner of Animafest Zagreb 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award
04/11/2024

By the decision of World Festival of Animated Film - Animafest Zagreb Festival Council, the winner of 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award is Phil Mulloy, British master of satire and grotesque.

Phil Mulloy (1948), a great master of British and world animation, began his creative journey with an education in painting and cinema, working successfully in live action film before specialising in recognisably minimalist, grotesque and unusually funny animated films. Acquiring a reputation and animating for the influential MTV channel, he cemented his animation fame with the films series Cowboys (1991), playing with the iconography and poetics of western. He was equally successful in the series of animated films The Ten Commandments (1994-96), based on the Bible, as well as the absurdist and dark trilogy Intolerance (2000-2004), leaning on sci-fi, and many other works.

Always with a vested interest in general social and political tendencies, with his untypical worlds he makes a powerful comment on the state of the present-day world, building an impression of the exceptional wealth of his films and relying on genre patterns and mythical tales. Playing with conventions well known to the viewers, he destroys them with dark humour, parodical erotica and an outstanding sense of absurdist narrative rhythm. A winner of many international awards, including an Animafest Zagreb Grand Prix (for his 2016 Endgame), Mulloy is one of the most important representatives of a generation of masters of visual arts who took up alternative poetics to penetrate the very core of animation and art, defining the power of grotesque in the artistic interpretation of the world.

Animafest Zagreb Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mulloy at the opening ceremony of the World Festival of Animated Film - Animafest Zagreb 2024.
