As the worldwide Animation Studies are rapidly growing and evolving in recent years, catching up with the increasing field of animated films, Animafest Scanner symposium is again at the frontline of the discourse and the interaction of theoretical and practical approaches to animation. The seventh edition of the Symposium for Contemporary Animation Animafest Scanner VII aims again to create synergy of theoretical and practical discourses, and stimulate exchange between filmmakers and scholars.

The symposium is held in association with the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb. Over the course of its forty-seven-year history, the festival has given a stage to different animation forms and formats in competition and non-competition environments, presenting a worldwide selection of auteur, experimental and mainstream animated films in various programs.

This year’s keynote speaker is the recipient of the Animafest Zagreb Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animation Studies for 2020, Canadian animation researcher and the Artistic Director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), Chris Robinson.

Chris Robinson is one of the stylistically most original and most provocative experts in the history of this area. He made a name for himself with a unique and eclectic magazine column Animation Pimp, which became a book of the same name (the column was later renamed into Cheer and Loathing in Animation). Equally successfully mastering different methods and styles in critical and scholarly approach, this animation researcher and populariser very successfully covers a very broad range of Canadian and global subject matters in his books Estonian Animation: Between Genius and Utter Illiteracy, 2003; Unsung Heroes of Animation, 2006; Canadian Animation: Looking for a Place to Happen, 2008; Ballad of a Thin Man: In Search of Ryan Larkin, 2008; Animators Unearthed, 2010;  and Japanese Animation: Time out of Mind, 2010, nevertheless remaining one of the most famous animation critics and journalists, both in print and online media, and one who keeps making new discoveries and offering fresh insights into canonical topics.

The speakers will focus on the following subjects:Animation in the World of Chaos, Women in Animation, Animation and Poetry.

Historical and current trends, numerous perspectives, new findings in the fast-growing field of animation studies, paired with exciting speakers – all this and more awaits you at the Animafest Scanner VII symposium, in the context of screenings and other events organised by Animafest 2020.
