Wednesday at Animafest: lectures, meet-ups and almost 100 films in the programme
06/11/2015

After the official opening of the World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest on Tuesday, supported by the full auditorium at Europa cinema, the first ‘working’ festival day was also quite eventful. One of the additional events particularly interesting to broader audience was the opening of an exhibition of children’s literature and animation by short film competition jury member Yumi Joung at ULUPUH Gallery, open until Sunday.

During the morning hours, the international Scanner II symposium also opened its doors with a lecture by GiannalbertoBendazzi, a famous film historian, author and professor. The symposium where international film and media theorists present the latest discoveries in the field of animation studies also takes place on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the double Oscar nominee Tomm Moore spoke about The Song of the Sea, which screened in the afternoon at Cineplexx Centar Kaptol cinema. A Q&A with the Lifetime Achievement Award winner Michel Ocelot took place at the French Institute Mediatheque, and the student authors were hosted at Tuškanac. All of the festival guests attended a formal reception with the City of Zagreb deputy mayor Vesna Kusin.

The film programme was, naturally, much more lavish than the side programme – about 100 films were screened. The Short Film Grand Competition at the prime time (8pm), Europa cinema, showed many outstanding films like Mister Lonely by Sung Min Jin, Pilots on the Way Home by Olga and PriitPärn, Mimmaby Calvin Antoine Blandin, and Suleima by Jalal Maghout. The programme also included Croatian animated films made in 1966 and 1967 (Wild Horse Tamer, Curiosity, The Fly, Diogenes Perhaps, The Shoe Inventor, Of Holes and Corks and Krek), feature from Alice in Wonderland section Little from the Fish Shop by Jan Balej, and the Croatian feature Unknown Energies, Unidentified Feelings by TomislavBabić and DaliborBarić. Next to the film screening, these two wrapped up the evening with an AV performance of Nimbus Dei band at the festival club Vinyl.
